Do I Care?

I have worked in the area of weight loss for over 35 years, and one comment that REALLY ticks me off is listening to "(He)/She's so fat that she just must not care about herself". What is even more astounding is that often the person making the comment is often not in all that decent shape themselves.
What is not understood (or seen) are the tears, myriad of fads and diets, doctor visits, negative and self-destructive thoughts, listening to the taunts, jeers, and comments, and the giving up. I am sure the list can easily be expanded.
If an overweight person does not care about themselves, why do they cry, or feel badly, when someone tells them they are fat? Why do they constantly try to diet and lose weight? Why do they choose clothing that is stylish? Why the make up? And so on.
It is human nature to care about one's self. We all do. Why would we be on this forum if there was not some self-interest. The fact is that there are a lot of very cruel people (at the least they are uninformed) who lack their own self-confidence. These are the people who are spitting out the unflattering comments. The next time you hear anyone say anything negative about someone else (or to you), just remember, it is usually to cover up some inadequacy that they are feeling about themselves. In that regard it is a type of sickness. So, if you feel a response is necessary, just say "I hope you are feeling better soon", smile, and walk away.
