If you had known me while in my college years, I wouldn't dream of having to write this, let alone be "sweating" my current shape. Yes, I'd heard it all before: "as you get older, you can't burn calories like you used to... Alcohol doesn't help a diet.....the stress of a career along with a lack of sleep, blah, blah, blah..." Well, here I am... Weighing in at 245 and constantly running out of gas. I am my worst fear.

As I type this, I've realized that I've come to the last straw on fighting my over-eating and bulging belly. Perhapas by discussing it freely and putting it out there, I will find the strength to move foward and find progress.

I guess the first step in this process is to identify my self-perceived problem. I'm a classic emotional eater. Some folks don't eat when they get stressed, but I eat MORE...way more. I travel a lot for my job and being in hotels away from my wife isn't easy, especially when you are blessed with the, "emotional gene." I find that when I have too much time, I eat (not because I'm hungry) too much.

So, here is what my current diet looks like:
Morning - black coffee (multiple cups)
Snack - two granola bars
Lunch - skipped mostly or granola bars
Snack - granola bars
Dinner - Subway or Quizznos w/ chips and drink

I know....I know..... I've identified that my diet needs help so here is where I'm seeking help. I don't cook breakfast or pack a lunch... I'm seeking simple and fast ( I travel). Suggestions?

My gym is another story.... I go, although it really doesn't matter. I spend no more than 30 minutes on the cross-country machine and leave. I tell myself that I'm doing well, but I seldom sweat and get my heart rate up. I'm thinking about running again even though it's hard on my knees. Is there a quick workout regiment that will get my heart rate up and only takes 30 minutes?

Oh, I almost forgot my worst vice - WINE. If red wine is good for the heart, then I'll have the strongest heart in Oregon. My wife and I drink a lot of wine and a bottle a night is not too far off.

So, here I am... exposed and now familiar with my 800' elephant. Looking for advice and support.

P.S. is it wrong that my chin has sweat under it?

Hi Philip! Good job on putting yourself out there and looking for support! You definately need to eat more than granola bars! Have you tried using an elliptical machine? I can't use the bike or run anymore because it hurts my knees, but I ahve found using an elliptical machine and upping the resistance has been the best way to get my ehart rate up and not hurt my joints! Also, you may need to start pushing yourself to pack a lunch and a snack. I keep raisins in single serve boxes in my purse so when I need a little something, I have it and dont have an excuse to eat something else. You should also try adding breakfast to your mornign routine (coffee doesnt count). I used to never eat breakfast, and I started my own new weight loss journey here recently and notice the difference that it makes in my energy level. Since you travel a lot, i'm assuming you eat out a lot? you might try getting one og those "Eat this, not that" books. They can be very helpful in making healthier decisions. It sounds as if you are eating too little, which can cause your body to go into starvation mode and store everything that comes in. So, eating more often might help kick in your metabolism. Also, i'm not sure of the calorie content of red whine, but i'm sure a bottle a night isnt helping your diet. You might also look up on the internet and find out your basal metabolic raqte, so you know how many calories you need to eat a day to maintian, and then you can work on losing weight from there. I wish you luck on your journey and if you have any questions or just need some support, we are here for you!
