Default Yoga Helps Protect The Brain From Depression

Researchers have found that 3 sessions of the yoga exercise a week can help fight depression. According to the article in telegraph.co.uk

Scientists found that the levels of the amino acid GABA are much higher in those that carry out yoga than those do the equivalent of a similarly strenuous exercise such as walking.

The chemical, GABA, is essential to the function of brain and central nervous system and which helps promote a state of calm within the body.

Low GABA levels are associated with depression and other widespread anxiety disorders.

So, if you need to lift up your mood, it's best to do yoga instead. Yoga exercises also helps improve balance, flexibility, strength and endurance. Not only that, they also help burn calories. In a typical yoga class, you can burn up to 144 calories in a 55 minutes session. For power yoga, you burn 237 calories, a 50-minute Pilates session (beginner) burn 174 calories and 254 calories for advanced class.

I have read articles from experts who recommend yoga to fight depression. It's great to know that there are studies to support it.

I'm not surprised about this. I haven't done yoga before but I heard it's good for meditation. It doesn't burn that much calories though. I guess this type of exercise is not meant for weight loss.

Oh yoga is now done by many not only to relieve from stress but also to lose weight. There is so much concentration and stretching that helps with losing weight. The energy you consume to do yoga too much that it helps burn calories. I have to say though that I believe yoga is good for depressed people because I know a friend who has gotten over her depression because of yoga. It helps you relax and keep your mind at peace and that affect the overall health too.

Would love to try this. A relaxed body keeps you away from sickness.

I think it can because meditation is good in clearing our mind of anything that bothers or hurts us. If one is able to put off her emotions during meditation, it's only a matter of time until you get over the depression.

I didn't know that. I sometimes feel so sad for no reason at all. And it lingers for a day. Sometimes it is triggered by some stories I heard that shouldn't bother me normally. But the following day, everything about me is back to normal.

I guess I'll read more about yoga. And maybe I'll try it.
