I'm one of those people who thought myths # 2, 3 and 4 were true. It's good to know that diabetics could still eat sweets however, I suggest they eat them occasionally and moderately.

For myth #2, overweight people are at risk in developing diabetes but it's not always the case. There are other factors involved, as explained in myth #3. Diabetics could use low calorie sweeters as substitute to sugar since low calorie sweeters do not raise blood glocuse levels

You are right mikaela. I read bout the artificial sweetners as well. I think it was originally intended for diabetics. My uncle is diabetic and he uses splenda all the time.

#4 I think is the most common misconception. I have a friend who absolutely refuses to eat sweets since he's afraid that his diabetes may worsen

Be sure to read labels. As a diabetic, I always thought Splenda was safe. Didn't they market it specifically to diabetics? Guess what...if you're a diabetic you'd better avoid the powdered splenda (in packets or in bulk) because in order for it to 'measure like sugar', they add maltodextrin which causes blood sugar spikes in diabetics. Irresponsible marketing. If you want to use splenda, you need to get it in liquid or tablet form and it's labeled 'sucralose' and does not contain maltodextrin.
