Research showed that hormones leptin and ghrelin both affect our appetite and are influenced by our sleeping pattern. Leptin, is our body's appetite suppressant and Ghrelin, triggers our desire for food. Lack of sleep reduces our level of leptin and increases level of ghrelin, thus your body tells you that you are hungry even if you don't need food.
Also during deep sleep, our brain secretes growth hormones and tells our body how to break down fats so if we are deprived of sleep, there won't be enough growth hormones to break down fats, therefore, our body will be stores it in our butt, thighs, belly and everywhere else.
That's why, it is advised that we get 6-8 hours sleep in order to balance the levels of these hormones. As a result, it helps us control our appetite, fight cravings and metabolize stored fats.
