    Default Dr. Bernstein Diet

It's another diet plan plan that is loved by many. It lowers the calorie intake to 800 a day which means 3 meals and no snacks. Meals consists of protein, vegetables, a small amount of carbohydrates, and take note, no fats allowed. You only eat protein in two meals which is during lunch and dinner. Breakfast is consisted of toast, fruit. You are also given 3 shots a week of a high potency B complex vitamins which is supposed to decrease your appetite for you to be able to handle 800 calories a day. Has anyone heard about this?

Yes I have heard about the Dr. Bernstein Diet on the books and the web . It is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet for people with diabetes or for diabetics and people with insulin resistance syndrome. The diet doesn’t recommend a specific ratio of the three main food groups: proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Instead, he advocates an individualized approach to a diabetic’s diet. At the center of the diet is the need for diabetics to test their blood sugar levels at least five to eight times a day. The function of Dr. Bernstein diet is to maintain constant, normal blood sugar levels throughout the day. Maintaining control of their blood sugar levels can help diabetics avoid long-term complications of the disease, including neuropathy of the feet, amputation, cataracts and blindness, heart disease, erectile dysfunction, glaucoma, ulcers of the feet, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Thanks for the details mikaela. Do you know which foods are prohibited while on a diet? I know though that fats are not allowed but I want to know which foods are prohibited.

Foods that should be avoided are:

snack foods (potato and tortilla chips, popcorn, cookies, candy, pretzels, and cakes), breakfast cereals, fruits and fruit juices, protein bars, milk and cottage cheese (except soy milk), vegetables (beans, beets, carrots, corn, potatoes, tomatoes (including tomato sauce and paste), canned and packaged soups, and most ‘health’ foods.

    Food that are allowed are:

meat, poultry, eggs, fish and seafood, tofu, soy meat substitutes, yogurt, butter, cheese, cream, margarine, soy milk, soy flour, and bran crackers. Other food items allowed include toasted nori (seaweed), artificial sweeteners (Equal, Sweet’n Low, Nutra-Sweet, and Splenda), No-Cal brand syrups, Da Vinci Gourmet brand syrups, flavor extracts, herbs and spices, low-carbohydrate salad dressings, nuts, and sugar-free gelatin and puddings.

Regarding the shots that should be done every week, those are vitamin and mineral supplements to maintain your health and enhance weight loss. Dr. Bernstein claims that B vitamins taken orally are significantly destroyed in the intestinal tract and only small amounts end up being absorbed. Injecting vitamins bypasses the intestinal tract and results in a higher concentration in the fat cells.

The member is required to come in to the office at least three times per week in which the progress and health is monitored daily by company nurses, and will be checked by the doctor frequently.

Medical supervision by a physician and nurses consists of a medical evaluation, laboratory analysis and regular monitoring to ensure healthy weight loss.

An individually prescribed program is designed for your specific needs with a diet and meal planner, recipe book and comprehensive weight loss guidebooks.

There are no precautions associated with the diet and there are no general health risks associated with the Bernstein diet either which tells us that the diet plan is safe and a healthy way dealing with diabetes and for losing weight too.
