Default is it true that school food is healthy?

some say at school that all the food we get is low in fats cause they want to stop or prevent obesity. it tastes funny i have to admit but is this truethe or is it just same but in smaller portions? i honestly don't mind but i wouldn't mind knowing what i put in my mouth.

I work at an elementary school and our cafeteria manager very much goes by the book. She and all of the other managers meet with the nutritionist and plan out the menu for each month way in advance. They must meet all of the daily food requirements of the food pyramid by percentages as well as prepare food that kids will eat. Most of our students buy lunch because our manager cooks the planned meals like she would cook for her family. She is Italian and we are very lucky to have her and appreciate her every day.

The problem with school food is that it's supposed to meet nutritional requirements set forth by the USDA and also appeal to the kids. So while hard tack, spinach, and boiled herring might be healthy it's not necessarily appealing so they resort to pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, etc... Now, they have set portions to go by and generally if a kid eats something out of every portion of their plates they'd be okay but most kids don't want anything but milk and cookies or the desserts and that's where school food gets a bad rap. It's no better at home where you have parents who either don't know or don't care enough about what is really in food and let their kid get away with eating nothing but animal crackers or soda pop. So school food is by law healthy for you. It might be the home food that'll kill you.

School food is a little healthy, depending on what they serve.

In my school district, where I have worked for 28 yrs, they have what they call a schoolnutritionist , who makes about 75K a year to ensure that the meals served in the cafeteria are healthy and well balanced. Sample menu? Deep fried macaroni and cheese, french fries, a chocolare chip cookie and an apple. Healthy? I think not.

I worked in a school cafeteria in NC, most of what they had besides fresh fruit or canned fruit and veggies was gov't surplus and horrid--the cheese had enough salt content to choke an adult to death, most of the other meats were strange grain concoctions, the deep fat fried stuff--well there ya go. Take your lunch or only eat the salad bar things or a carton of milk or juice. I quit after 3 months, couldn't stand it.

At my school they pretend to serve healthy food.
They won't sell candy and they offer stuff like baked chips but they still sell french fries, hamburgers, pizza....
So just be smart! If it's covered in grease or in a shiny wrapper, your school probably isn't serving healthy food.
