Default What Not To Eat During Your Period

Most of us women suffer from PMS and it is always a pain and uncomfortable. Do you know that we may avoid the painful menstrual period if we skip eating foods that triggers it? Here are some of the foods that we shouldn't eat during that time of the month:

Melons. Fruits that contain a lot of water should be avoided because the body flushes them out together with the menstrual flow causing heavy flow.

Chilled Fruits. Try to keep away from chilled fruits as most fruits are already 'cooling' in nature (according to traditional chinese medicine). Eating chilled fruits can cause severe cramps. Eat some "heaty" fruits instead such as oranges, lychee, and avocado.

Chilled Drinks & Dessert. Sodas, ice tea, and other common chilled drinks should be avoided too, especially tea because of its cooling elements. Milkshakes and ice-cream should also be avoided as these can also worsen cramps especially for lactose intolerat women. Plain/warm water is the best. Drinking coffee isn't a good idea either as the body tends to flush it out together with water and the menstrual flow, causing heavy flow.

Salad. For extra sensitive people, try not to eat salads too, especially lettuce, raw tomatoes and cucumber because these foods belong to the "cooling" category. Instead go for hot soups and cooked meals as it keeps the body warm.

Refined Sugars. Refined sugars offer very little to no nutritional value and can also increase cramping of the uterus. Foods that have refined sugars are candies, chocolates, sodas, and most of pastries. Try eating "heating" fruits and vegetables because they restore energy and can make you feel better overall.

Salts. Why? Because salt can dehydrate and worsen water retention. That is the reason why we oftentimes tend to bloat as caused by water retention. So no pop corn, potato chips, and pretzels until it's over.

Caffeine Until your monthly period is over, opt for decaf for awhile because caffeine worsens discomfort by constricting blood vessels and decreasing blood flow. Decreased blood flow can lead to excruciating abdominal pains.

Alcoholic Beverages. Just like salt, alcohol worsens dehydration that leads to increased amount if cramping.

Fatty foods. Eating fatty foods loaded with saturated fats and trans fats such as deep fried foods like French fries, onion rings, and other fast food products are not healthy during this period. Eating a low fat diet during the monthly period can help relieve pain and cramping and reduce water retention.

A little advise, DO NOT EAT EGGS during your monthly period because it produces awful smells after eating eggs . So while you have your period, stay away from eggs!

Really?! That's good to know. I didn't expect that one at all and didn't know that it could affect our body that much during our period. Thanks for sharing that Kathy! I'm sure many of the women here are happy to hear about that tip

You're welcome mikaela . I knew about that awhile back from an article online so even if I enjoy eating eggs, I avoid them during that time of the month

I didn't know all these until I read this thread. I do suffer from cramps during my period and I think the wrong foods I eat adds to that pain. I normally love to eat sweets and chilled fruits, even chilled drinks. I also didn't know about the eggs producing awful smell when eaten during the monthly period. It's so good to know!
