When I was a kid, there were very little fast food places around and there was definitely NOT grocery stores jam packed with aisles of crap. Back when I was a kid (1970's), please just naturally ate healthy, even tho the boom of fast food places was on the rise. Most families back then lived on one income, so eating out was more of a luxury than a necessity and therefore, the nutrition issue was never raised. The best way to teach kids about nutrition today is by eating well yourself. It's not rocket science to figure out what's good and bad. There's no need to deny yourself some junk food, but it should never be considered a food group the way it is today. But since kids today are brought up on it, it is very hard to untrain them. Best way, as I said, is to teach by doing.

You can discuss your menu choices--and why you chose them--with your kids. Don't have to make a big deal out of it, just be consistent.
I remember a teacher's saying, "Well-dressed potatoes always wear their jackets to dinner!" Bothered me for years, since we weren't allowed to wear our coats inside the house--and I had never heard of potato skins being called jackets.

Go to Barnes and Nobles. There has to be some good kid's books on this.

I learned about nutrition in Junior High by getting fat and pudgy. I learned if I only eat M &M's and Twinkies I get fat and people make fun of fat kids. Layed off the sweets and got back to normal before it was too late.

We learnt about nutrition etc in home economics class at school. My mother also educated me regarding the importance of eating a healthy balanced diet and getting plenty of fruit and veg down you! As for the best way to teach your kids.....the Internet gives you the facts you need, and getting them involved with food prep/cooking keeps them interested and more likely to eat it!

I never received any nutrition information growing up. Luckily I'm the type of person that likes to get answers to all her questions so I do a lot of research. :-)
