major things are choosing whole grains and healthy fats, avoiding refined foods - especially sugars, and increasing the amount of fruits and veggies in your diet.

This means brown rice, whole grain breads and pastas. Stay away from sugary cereals and fast foods. Choose honey and other natural sweeteners. Turn down creamy sauces and dressing unless you know they are made with skim milk. Choose fat free and low fat dairy products.

Choose poultry and fish often over beef - or choose lean cuts of beef. Eat more vegetarian foods (ensure you get ample protein and B vitamins).

Use olive oil. Use non-hydrogenated margarines. Eat REAL peanut butter (or almond/hazulnut butter) made with only nuts.

Use whole grain flours.

Choose fresh and frozen veggies and fruit over canned when possible and eat a ton!

Cooking and preparing your own food is the most surefire way to ensure that you are eating healthy. You can read lots of articles and books on this and find tips to save money and time as well.

I love to snack on fresh cut veggies and sometimes dip them in a yoghurt/blue cheese dip I make myself. You can get healthy crackers and rice chips or baked chips over regular chips. Dark, high quality chocolate is better than regular. Chai non-fat lattes sweetened with honey are healthier than hot chocolate (and tastier IMO)

Hoped this helped a little.
