Default Has anyone tried Spirulina ( A herbal drug) and does it help energy...

...levels as someone told me it might? I'm so tired , I have depression and take Cymbalta for that.
I've tried different vitamins- B, multis, I'm just tired most of the time.
Someone suggested Spirulina- just wondered if anyone knows anything about it?
I don't know if it's the Cymbalta making me tired, but I tried not having anti-depressants a while back and I just feel dreadful with depression and anxiety

It is full of wonderful nutrients in a highly usable form. It is not much of a stimulant though, beyond being a source of B-vitamins. Any B-supplement can do that.

How is Cymbalta affecting your energy levels?

I dont know if there are any interactions with Cymbalta and herbal products (You should always double check), but Rhodiola Rosea and Siberian Ginseng will help aid endurance...they are not exactly stimulants and not as warming as Panax ginseng, but they will help take the edge off being tired and the Rhodiola will increase oxygen efficiency. Green tea and yerba mate might be healthier than coffee.

You dont really want to get too hooked on stimulants. If you are feeling tired all the time, maybe you should switch medications. Talk to your doctor about that....doctors often dont know jack about stimulants and just tell you not to take them to play it safe (to cover their own ass), but they do know about prescription drugs, so if you are feeling tired all the time maybe you are on the wrong medication.

Talk to your doctor, there might be a medication that suits you better.
In any case before you do take another product...
    Blue-Green Algae (Spirulina) Oral Interactions
Before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription medications you may use

I have waded through a long list of cymbalt interactions and it seems ok, but better safe than sorry.

    Some of the following symptoms after taking Spirulina;
    1. Slight fever due to the body's need to burn the extra protein from Spirulina
    2. Slight dizziness. If this occurs, take less of the product. If the symptom does not improve please stop taking Spirulina
    3. Thirst and constipation. After taking a high volume of Spirulina we recommend at least an extra 1/2 litre of water per day to help our body absorb the Spirulina
    4. Stomach ache
    5. Skin itch or slight body rash

There has been much research and study regarding spirulina's ability to put throat cancer into remission. I wouldn't speculate as to whether it can or not - but if I had throat cancer, I'd sure give it a try because of the studies I've personally read about.

And.... "...Because of its cleansing, restoring and fortifying functions, Spirulina has a wide range of applications. It gives you new energy without taking pep-ups and makes you more alert and stable.."

Spirulina is just a nutrient, an algae that provides you with vitamins and minerals. Don't attribute any special energy benefits to it -- that wouldn't be the case. But, as someone else suggested ahead of me, if you want to safely take an herb that will not only improve your energy but also work with the Cymbalta to help you feel better about things, try some Rhodiola rosea. That's a cold weather herb (the best comes from Siberia) and it has never been found to have any negative side effects or ugly interactions with pharmaceutical products. If you have a holistic MD, you can ask about it, or just try one of the better brands by taking a half-dose a day to see how it affects you. (I take one called MIND BODY & SPIRIT, which says to take two or three capsules a day -- you could just take one capsule, or even mix a half-capsule with juice because it is water soluble). There are many cheap brands that don't do anything, so stick to a good one like this, or Verde Botanica, etc. Anyway, Rhodiola provides both energy and an upbeat mood, both of which sound important to you!

If you are always tired even with the medication I suggest you go to your doctor and get a checkup. You may need other medication or anti-depressants. What you are currently taking may not be an effective medication for your condition. Do not self medicate because you might be causing your health more harm.

Spirulina is rich in antioxidants and that it also boosts energy and cellular health. It is a rare food source of the essential fatty acid GLA, it is also high in B-12 and easy-to-absorb iron. However there are some reported side effects like nausea may be caused by toxins from contaminant algae.

I agree that you visit your doctor first to know the best medication for your condition. Self medication always cause more trouble that its side effects because of the ingredients that are not fit to your sex, age, lifestyle, and eating habit. Not to metion allegies that often times end badly. Depression is a serious condition that needs a lot of attention. Do not take it for granted and let the professional tell you what is the right medication for you. I hope this helps Pisces. Good luck
