Default Have you heard about the Duodenal Switch?

It is an awesome alternative to LapBand and RNY surgery. It offers a cure for diabetes and 80%+ sustained excess weight loss. You can check out www.obesityhelp.com or www.duodenalswitch.com for more information.
I can and will compare the DS with all other WLS options. Any weight loss procedure you undertake is major surgery. The band does not rearrange your digestive tract, but it inserts a foreign object into your system. The band itself has been known to cause problems, and many lapband patients get revision operations to convert to DS.

Long term data is indeed available, at http://www.duodenalswitch.com. This procedure predates the lapband, and as previously stated, long term research shows excess weight loss in the 70-80% range as far out as 10 years, as well as a 98% cure rate for type II diabetes.

I encourage everyone to research weight loss surgery. Specifically, look at people who are years out from their procedure and see how they are faring. An interesting forum is the Obesity Help Revision forum. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/revision

Here is the DS forum: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/

Haven't heard about it. But I have a brother that could benefit from it. Thinks for the info.

Do not compare this surgical overhaul with the Lap Band. The Lap Band does not rearrange your digestive tract, rather, it simply provides a restrictive food pouch in order to limit the volume of food eaten. Food is digested and absorbed normally.

Gastric bypass as well as the duodenal switch are both malabsorptive surgeries that can cause ongoing problems. As for "curing diabetes" any significant weight loss generally reverses patients with diabetic symptoms, reducing or completely eliminating medication previously used to control it.

As for long-term weight loss, this procedure is relatively new, so long-term data is not available. While the duodenal switch will result in weight loss, the lap band is far safer in the long run and accomplishes the same thing without the serious health risks of bypass surgeries. Do your research, with a focus on bad outcome about 2 years after surgery, i.e. serious complications and death.

The intestinal portion has been used for years as a stand alone surgery in Europe, even on normal weight people, as a cure for type II diabetes. The 98% cure rate is effective as early as immediately after surgery and is not dependant in any way on weight loss.
