Default Help! My baby won't let go of my boob..ever!..Normal?

Since yesterday my son has been kind of strange, crying all the time & acting hungry.. right now i fed him for an hour & he would not let go, then i took him off the breast & right now he's putting his hand in his mouth, i called his pediatrician last night because he would not stop crying, he wanted to nurse all the time, she told me to give him an oz or 2 of formula.. i didn't because i would feel like such a failure, i have not supplemented & i don't think my milk supply is going down but my son nursed all day long yesterday, every 30 minutes or something & when he was not nursing he was crying. i checked his temperature, he's fine.. he's getting the right amount of diapers dirty & wet.. so what is this? he's only 5 wks old so he's not teething.. what could this be?

today he's been kind of fussy but not as much as yesterday..
it's not that i think formula is bad but i have my heart set on breastfeeding exclusively
    he'll be 6 wks tomorrow

babies go through a growth spurt at 5-6 weeks. he wanted more milk than you had, and constant nursing stimulated your breasts to make more. don't supplement, its important that he nurse and help up your supply. it will settle down today or tomorrow

5-6 weeks is a prime time for a growth spurt

don't worry honey....i have been thru this too

and don't supplement.....your doc is totally uneducated about breastfeeding and of course his first response is "formula"

that crap makes me soooo mad

if this continues past a comfortable time frame for you then go see the lactation consultant

edit....haaaaaaa......oh yes some doc that has never breastfed or that sees breast babies is more qualified than ,I, a nursing mother of 2 breast babies

docs simply are NOT educated in breastfeeding....period....with few exceptions

    get of of here troll

My guess would be that he is going through a growing spurt and so wants more milk. My daughter did the same thing at about 5 weeks. He's so little...if you can just let him nurse all he wants. Your milk supply will increase and he'll feel up faster. He's probably draining you now and is still hungry so 1/2 hour later he wants more. Your body should adjust...just might take a couple days.

Hang in there. Breastfeeding is awesome.

Sometimes they just like to suckle (us a pacifier)

If he really is hungry use the formula (its thicker than breast milk and will fill him up faster.) Don't stop breast feeding just add a 3 oz bottle of formula once or twice a day.

I had to with my son. He was on both breast and bottle

Growth spurt- he is approaching 6 weeks right? He is right on target for a growth spurt.

Definately don't supplement. Just nurse. I know it's hard because all you do is nurse, but it's going to pass after this week. You are almost through the hard part.

    Good job!

Edit: I am so stunned as I think about the fact that your pediatrician said: formula
First without even considering: growth spurt.

ALL babies have a growth spurt right now- and breastfeeding moms are more aware of the change because they are nursing their babies.

Good luck! You are doing fine- and your baby is right on target!

Edit: Hello Baby love- and thanks for the thumbs down:
Clearly you haven't breastfed- so let me give you an education:
    1. You do not supplement this early- mom's milk is getting established.
    2. Baby is not starving at all: baby is GROWING- this is why baby is nursing so often.
    3. Formula may cause tummy upset as well as cause baby to develop a nipple preference and REFUSE the breast. Not recommended to give a fake nipple yet.
I would suggest YOU do some research.
Gosh, I get tired of trolls.

Looks like you and Moon... have a lot in common. Funny how you use the same language- note the choice of words. Nice.

He's probably going through a growth spurt.

But it is quite sad that even if you did give him some formula, you would feel like a failure. My daughter was formula fed, she is healthy, at the exact weight and height she is supposed to be, and i am in NO WAY a failure because i fed her formula.

This happened to me at the same age, I called it a boob day. He is probably going through a growth spurt, he should go back to normal in a couple of days. Grab a blanket, a pillow and hope there's a good movie on.
