After a 2 year study of the new weight loss pill Lorcaserin, it was considered safer than many other diet drugs and was proven to aid with weight loss. Researchers studied 3,000 obese or overweight patients and nearly 50% lost 5% of their body weight. Only 5 of the dieters lost 10% of their body weight and those who stayed on the drugs for two years maintained their weight loss.
The weight loss isn't that much but the drug does not have any troubling side effects. Instead, it produced small improvements in heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol and insulin resistance.
Lorcaserin helps control appetite and the manufacturer, Arena Pharmaceuticals, is not seeking approval from FDA and the decision is expected later this year.
