Default Calcium Supplements May Increase Risk Of Heart Attack

I read an interesting article at CBC News and it says Calcium Supplements May Increase Risk Of Heart Attack.

Calcium supplements are widely used to prevent osteoporosis but British Medical Journal suggests that it could result to a higher risk of heart attacks. Researchers from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, also did a study and their findings showed that o the 6,166 participants who took calcium supplements, 166 of them experienced a heart attack (myocardial infarction), compared with 130 out of 5,805 in the placebo group. This translates to about 30% increased risk of heart attack.

This is not a good news since a lot of women take calcium supplements especially once they reach a certain age to help prevent osteoporosis. I think it's best to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle instead of taking supplements.

Really? Well, you can always get your calcium in foods like cheese, milk, yogurt, etc.. It's healthier and safer.

They only prescribe you take calcium if you are not getting enough from your diet right? i agree with sasa.. Simply add more calcium rich foods in your diet.. That should solve the issue.

Really? I drink chocolate milk drink that is rich in calcium because I have weak bones. Does it count as calcium supplement? That is really a disappointment because we women take these supplements to prevent osteoporosis. If it can increase the risk of heart attack, I might as well just drink low fat milk from now on.
